In the Omaru Creek there has been sewage overflows, also blockages because of the locals putting rubbish and fat down the drain. Even though it wasn’t the Maintenance crew’s job to clean up the creek they did it anyway. They flushed wet wipes that were in the pipes out because such things form large clumps that cause blockages. Rotting mattresses, kids toys, and cans were also found in the creek. They flushed the Omaru creek with clean freshwater and tested the water for 5 days.
Our school has a part to clean up and it is near Apirana Avenue. In the creek we saw algae, overgrown weeds, an aerosol can, branches, and a metal pipe. These are photos of the creek now, but in five weeks time we hope the water will be healthy and fresh for the community.
